Get your minds out of the gutter!

A spurtle is an old Scottish cooking implement, and I just found out today, it's the award given to the champion porridge maker in Scotland. I've never been much of a fan of porridge, but I think that's partly because my Mum was not the best cook in the world, and it came out a bit solid and salty.

I do like the sound, and look, of the 'specialty' porridge, which had Glenfiddich in it - mmm!

[livejournal.com profile] scunnered: what would YOU do with porridge to liven it up and make a go for the Golden Spurtle?

Roy, there are so many ways you don't want me to answer that question!

Anyway, possibly a maple, walnut and banana variation would be nice. Or perhaps a cranberry yoghurt or something. I'm thinking...

After I wrote it, I thought, ooh, er... ;-) I had visions of pics with you with strategically placed mounds of porridge porridge - that would liven it up! :-)

You'll have to share pictures of your spurtle with your LJ friends - the one you use to make your delicacies in the restaurant, of course - what else did you think I meant?

It'll be some kind of deranged Scottish food porn: a knob covered in porridge!

With honey on top... ;-)

A nice touch. Don't think for one second I'm posting that!

Awww!

I actually would never have thought of honey and porridge until I saw the pic on the BBC site (or is that syrup?). My memory of porridge was, as I said, rather stodgy and solid, with salt, and milk on it.

I never liked it with salt in it. I;m not sure about honey on it either but I do like it with brown sugar.

You have to do the salt AND the sweet...Like salted caramel...HEAVEN.

Now, I love salted caramel and made some recently with pecans. I'm not entirely sure about it with porridge. I may need some convincing.

Sorry, just had a completely pervy thought...what were you saying?

Oh, nothing important. I am slightly afriad to ask about the pervy thought though...

It had to do with salty caramel and "knobs"... mmmmmm.

Well, all I hope is that the caramel had time to cool...

I think a bunch of santanas and treacle and heavy cream should do the trick...

Apropo of nothing, a young, built, bearded, hairy chested guy in a flannel shirt and a kilt just sat next to me in the coffeeshop and I am blushing so furiously I must be GLOWING.

I think I need to try porridge again..

Your coffeeshop companion sounds delish! You need to take some sly cellphone pics.
